Chennai, the Gateway of the south, the coral of the Coromandal coast and during the British raj, the most important city in the south is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is a coastal city that was formerly known as Madras and houses the second oldest civic administrative body in the world after London, the Greater Chennai Civic Corporation which was established in 1688. It is the oldest Civic body in the country.

Subsequently, this has resulted in Chennai being one of the most livable cities in India. It is among the safest in the country as well and boasts of great cultural diversity. It is well connected through roads, airways and is home to one of the oldest railway lines in the country. 

When it comes to commercial and industrial aspects, Chennai has been one of the most important ports of trade for centuries. It houses a large chunk of automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries and has the highest number of fortune 500 companies in South India. 

While it holds the first rank in many enviable aspects, it also tops the list of the hottest cities in India. It has sweltering and humid summers and pleasant winters with a fairly large amount of rainfall each year. Even with all this, it is quite a large tourist hub.

As a tourist attraction, Chennai ranks very high among the metropolitan cities in India. It has a versatile portfolio for tourism, and there is evidence of its popularity. It is among the most visited city in the country by expats and ranks 36 worldwide on the list of most visited places in the world. It is the only south Asian city listed on National Geographic’s Top 10 food cities in the world and attracts 45% of health tourism in India
