About the city - Pune
Pune is the second largest city of Maharashtra and the seventh populous city of the country. It sprawls across the lush green foothills of Sahyadri hills which gives it a picturesque landscape and a pleasant atmosphere. Voted as the most liveable place of the country quite a few times, this city is now counted among the tier one metro cities.
Historically this city was the seat of the Prime Minister or Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. Mughals ruled the city for a very brief period and then it was occupied by the British empire. But eventually it became one of the important centres for the independence movement led by notable freedom fighters like Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
Often referred to as the Oxford of East, this city has an abundance of reputed universities like University of Pune now known as Savitribai Phule Pune University, National Chemical Laboratory, National Defence Academy, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Film and Television Institute of India and many other notable private universities. Presently the city is one of largest IT hubs of the country and is a major center of automobile industry, drawing students and professionals from all over the country.
