Mumbai-About City
Mumbai is the 8th most populous city and one of the alpha-megacities of the world. It is a collection of seven islands which used to be fisherman villages.
Mumbai was included in the Mauryan empire by the Ashoka and after that it was occupied by many small Indian Kingdoms until Mughals. During the medieval time it became a part of Gujarat Sultanate but its true potential was yet to be discovered! It has yet to become the Bombay or the Mumbai that it is today. When the Portuguese reached the shore of Mumbai, they found it as a safe haven of good water and started calling it ‘Bom Bahia’ which literally means ‘Good Bay’ in Portuguese. It became an important trade port and was gifted to the Britishers when a Portuguese princess married an English Prince.
The English used the city as an important trade Center and started building almost every modern amenity from this city. By the time India got Independence it was already the most equipped and developed place which was way ahead of every other city of the country.
