Types of Housewarming Ceremony/Griha Pravesh Puja
There are 3 types of house warming ceremony as per ancient Hindu traditions, according to when & how the occupants are moving into the house.

#1 Apoorva Griha Pravesh
In Sanskrit, ‘Apoorva’ means new or never seen before.
Thus, ‘Apoorva Griha Pravesh’ means family members are moving into a newly constructed house for the first time.
#2 Sapoorva Griha Pravesh
If you’re moving into an already-constructed house/flat (e.g., on a rent basis), or re-entering your vacant house after an international migration, you must perform a ‘Sapoorva Griha Pravesh’.
Important: Ensure the house is thoroughly cleaned before performing the puja.
#3 Dwandwah Griha Pravesh
If you’re re-entering your home after a natural calamity (fire, air, water, earthquake, etc.) or after renovating the house, you must perform a ‘Dwandwah Griha Pravesh’.
Crucial Points to Remember When Selecting Grah Pravesh ka Muhurat

- Griha Pravesh Shubh Muhurat varies from one city to another. Therefore, you must consult a local experienced & trusted astrologer/pandit to get the best shubh muhurat with exact timings in your location.
- Panchang Shuddhi is extremely crucial to find the most auspicious date & shubh muhurat timings for the Griha Pravesh Puja.
- All five elements of the Panchang (Vara, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karna) must be purified, i.e., all the inauspicious dates corresponding to Guru Tara Asta, Shukra Tara Asta, Leap Lunar year, Leap Lunar months, Krishna Paksha, and all muhurats that are lesser than 4 hours are removed.
- As per religious texts like Dharmasindhu & Muhurta Chintamani, a house warming ceremony must never be performed during Guru Tara Asta & Shukra Tara Asta (setting of Jupiter & Venus) as these planets/stars are crucial for the positivity of the house warming ceremony (especially Apoorva Griha Pravesh).
- Sun must be in Uttarayan position to perform Apoorva Griha Pravesh (i.e., movement of Sun from South to North - this usually begins from Jan 14 (Makar Sankranti) and goes on for a period of 6 months).
- Also, the exact shubh muhurat must be adhered to.
- The setting of Guru (Jupiter) and Shukra (Venus) are considered ideal for Sapoorva Griha Pravesh as the tara/star does not matter in this case.
- in this griha pravesh, the purity of panchang must be ensured.
- Avoid these inauspicious Lunar months at all costs for your house warming puja in 2022, to avert any ill & adverse effects of performing positive activities in these time periods:
- Magha (January 18 - February 16, 2022)
- Chaitra (March 19 - April 16, 2022)
- Shravana (July 14 - August 12, 2022)
- Bhadrapada >(August 12 - September 10, 2022)
- Ashwin (September 11 - October 9, 2022)
- Karthik (October 10 - November 8, 2022)
- Paush (December 9 - January 6, 2023)
- Avoid inauspicious days in any month for carrying out the Griha Pravesh ceremony:
- Tuesdays & Sundays; sometimes Saturdays are avoided too (consult pandit for exact dates)
- Rahu Kalam Timings on each day must be avoided
- New Moon Days (Amavasya)
- Full Moon Days (Purnima/Pournami)
- Krishna Paksha (Waning Moon period)
- All Eclipses (Lunar eclipse, Solar eclipse)
- Shukra & Guru Tara Asta (Combustion of Venus & Jupiter)

#3 How to Choose the Best Tithi for Griha Pravesh
तिथि
/tithi/
- a lunar day
As per Hindu tradition, the tithi (or date) is most important when selecting a muhurat for any special activity, as each tithi is considered more favorable & opportune for some occasions than others.
In the Hindu Lunar Calendar, there are 30 tithis in each lunar month, 15 for each fortnight before & after the Full Moon (Purnima).

- The first fortnight of a month (between New Moon Day & Full Moon Day) is known as Shukla Paksha (lit. bright/white/golden side), the period of the waxing moon.
- The second fortnight of the month (after the Full Moon Day) is known as Krishna Paksha (lit. black/dark side), the period of the waning moon.
Tithis in the Krishna Paksha of a month are considered inauspicious for any occasion as the moon is losing light (energy) in this period.
Thus, Shukla Paksha tithis are most preferred for a housewarming ceremony, among which, the most auspicious ones are:
- Pratipada (1st day after New Moon)
- Dwitiya (2nd day after New Moon)
- Tritiya (3rd day after New Moon)
- Panchami (5th day after New Moon)
- Shashti (6th day after New Moon)
- Saptami (7th day after New Moon)
- Dashami (10th day after New Moon)
- Ekadashi (11th day after New Moon)
- Dwadashi (12th day after New Moon)
- Trayodashi (13th day after New Moon)
#4 How to Choose Best Nakshatra for Griha Pravesh
नक्षत्रम्
/Naksatram/
- The section of the Sun’s orbit crossed by the Moon during its orbit around Earth (occurs 27 times a year; sometimes 28).

These cross-sections are called Nakshatras (lit. “stars”). There are 27 nakshatras in Hindu astronomy, with each of their names corresponding to a prominent star or asterism (group of stars that can be seen in the night sky) in or near the respective segments.
A Nakshatra shows us the direction of the flow of nature’s energy. Hence, it plays a major role in every Hindu’s daily life starting from birth as well as when planning to perform any special activities like baby-naming ceremony, marriage, property registration, vehicle purchase, house warming puja, etc.
The most favorable nakshatras for a positive housewarming ceremony are:
- Anuradha (Scorpius constellation)
- Chitra (Virgo constellation)
- Mrigashira (Orion constellation)
- Revati (Pisces constellation)
- Rohini (Taurus constellation)
- Uttara Bhadrapad (Pegasus & Andromeda constellation)
- Uttara Phalguni (Leo & Virgo constellation)
- Uttara Ashadha (Sagittarius & Capricorn constellation)
Housewarming Puja Vidhi & Mantra

#1 Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi
The Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi varies drastically for entering a newly built house & when moving into a rented home (explained later).
While a house warming ceremony in a rented house can be done by yourself without a pandit, Nutan Griha Pravesh Puja for a new house involves many rituals & an elaborate Puja ceremony conducted by a learned pandit, that lasts for a couple of hours.
Griha Pravesh Puja for a new house is mainly centered on Vighnaharta Vigneshwara - Lord Ganesha - the remover of all obstacles.
All the rituals involved in the house warming Puja, along with their step-by-step process are as follows:
Vastu Puja:
- Preparing the Mangal Kalash:
- Fill a copper/silver Kalash with Ganga Jal, Navdhanya, and a coin; place 8 mango leaves spread out from inside the Kalash (you can also use Ashoka leaves).
- Tie a coconut with a red cloth & red thread and keep it on the Kalash (the husband & wife will carry this into the house after Vastu Puja).
Griha Pravesh Puja:
- Breaking the Coconut: At the prescribed time, the house owner will break a coconut at the entrance of the main door while chanting mantras symbolizing the removal of all obstacles. Apply turmeric & kumkum to the broken coconut.
- Entering the House: The homeowner will take the first step into his new home carrying a Photo of their Deity, the Mangal Kalash, an idol of Lord Ganesh, Dakshinavarti Shankh, and a Shree Yantra.
- Make sure to enter the house at the exact shubh muhurat time.
- The husband & wife must carry these 5 essential things when entering the house: Coconut, Turmeric, Jaggery, Rice & Milk/Curd.
- Men must step in with their right foot forward & women must use their left leg first.
- Establishing the Kalash: The owner must place the idol of Lord Ganesha & the Mangal Kalash with a little rice, in the North-East corner of the house/in the room of worship while chanting these Ganpati mantras:
- ॐ गं गणपतये नमः (Om Gam Ganapatye Namah)
- वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ। (Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha)
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥ (Nirvignhnam Kuru Mey Deva Sarvakaaryeshu Sarvada) - Purify Each Room: At a time during the Puja, the priest will direct the owner to sprinkle Navdhanya in each room to purify them (the 9 grains are - Black Seasame Seeds, Bengal Gram, Horse Gram, Green Gram, Rice, White beans, Chickpeas, Black Gram, and Wheat).
- You may also sprinkle Gaumutr (cow urine) as it is considered auspicious & pure.
- Kitchen Puja & Boiling Milk: The priest will do Puja in the kitchen to worship the stove & fire;
- the lady of the house will light the stove & boil milk in a new utensil until it overflows and spills onto the stove & kitchen counter.
- Sweet Preparation: After this, the lady of the house will cook a sweet from the boiled milk and first offer it to God.
- The lady must then take out some food for the Cow, Crow, Dog, and Ant. Food must be offered to the Priest too, without fail, at the end of the ceremony.
Vastu Shanti/ Graha Shanti Havan: (Optional)
- Vastu Shanti Homa/Havan is performed to seek the blessings of Vastu Purusha (the God of Land & Direction); Vastu Shanti helps get rid of any ill effects of Vastu Dosha or defects of bad Vastu that may have occurred during the house construction.
- Graha Shanti Puja is done to please the 9 planets (Navagraha) & seek their blessings; Graha Shanti helps remove the harmful influence of the planets & get rid of any kind of negative vibrations in the house.
Griha Pravesh Puja Completion:
- At the end of the Griha Pravesh Puja & Vastu Puja, sprinkle Holy Water from the Mangal Kalash in all corners of the house to purify & enliven the space.
#2 How to do House Warming Puja without Priest (for rented house)
If you’re moving into a rented house, you can do a simple housewarming Puja by yourself, without the help of any pandit. Follow the steps given below:
- Clean the house thoroughly; decorate the main entrance with flowers & draw the Swastika symbol on the inside & outside.
- Set up the mandir or place of worship with your deity’s photos & light the Diya.
- Perform a small Puja & chant the Griha Pravesh Mantras (mentioned below).
- You can also chant the Gayatri Mantra / Navagraha Mantra 108 times.
- Or, you could also play recorded mantras on the phone.
[Mantras help remove negative energies around you & fill your living space with positive energies & a peaceful aura.]
- Perform a small Puja in your kitchen & boil milk in a new utensil (let it overflow onto the stove/countertop).
- Prepare a sweet dish out of the boiled milk by adding some sugar & grains to it.
- Offer the prepared sweet to God; take out some for the Cow, Dog, Crow, and Ant; also offer sweets & fruits to any needy people nearby.
